Villa Maria included in New World’s go-to list for award winning wines

If you love wine but you’re not so sure on all the technical terms it can be hard to choose a bottle from the masses on the shelf at the supermarket.

Fear not, the New World ‘go-to’ list for award-winning wines features the top 50 wines that are both widely available and affordable and include favourites from local winemaking hotspots like Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay.

An independent panel of judges for New World Wine Awards have worked their way through over 1,100 wine entries to reveal what to look for when choosing the perfect wine this season.

It took three full days of judging to find the best wines from around New Zealand and the world.

To the delight of Kiwis everywhere, New Zealand-made wines have taken 42 of the 50 placings in the New World Wine Awards Top 50 list, including iconic New Zealand winery, Villa Maria.

The Villa Maria old winning wines include the Private Bin Gewurztraminer 2021 and Pinot Gris 2021, Cellar Selection Chardonnay 2020, Reserve Albariño 2021 and Barrique Chardonnay 2019.

These five wines reflect Villa Maria’s outstanding quality and are wines that are truly made for the moment and made to feel special.

Private Bin East Coast Pinot Gris 2021

Combining sunny-sweet fruits from Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay backed by vibrant South Island grapes, this is succulent and plump with ripe pear and apricot flavours with a spicy undertone, finishing rounded and supple. There’s a hint of sweetness, which makes it versatile, ideal with an antipasto platter.

Cellar Selection Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2020

Classically Hawkes Bay in style this Chardonnay reveals a fragrant nose of grilled peach and nectarine stone fruit. A silken textured mouth feel unfolds with layers of fruit and delicate French oak spice with wonderful acidity.

Reserve Hawkes Bay Albariño 2021

Originating from the Galicia province in the north-east of Spain, Albariño grape has a fun attitude about it. It’s crisp and lively with a nicely weighted body. This impressive rendition shows white flesh peach, jasmine and citrus peel notes with a brisk, crisp mouthfeel, making it ideal with grilled fish and salt & pepper squid.

Private Bin East Coast Gewurztraminer 2021

This wine shows perfumed and classic varietal aromas of rose petal, lychee and spice. The palate reveals similar flavours, delivered with lovely richness, seamless texture and balance.

Reserve Gisborne Barrique Fermented Chardonnay 2019

Styled to capture the regional essence of Gisborne, the Barrique offers a complex medley of fresh stone fruit aromas with hints of tropical fruits and smoky grilled nut characters.
