This year’s Matariki festival kicks off on 24 June with plenty of fun, informative and breathtaking events throughout the nation. This extra special day marks the first Matariki public holiday, so we have chosen a few events that are sure to keep the whole family entertained.
Poi Workshop in Matakana
Poi Yeah and Unity Collection celebrate Matariki with a fun-packed Poi workshop. On 3 July, locals can learn how to swing Poi like a professional and learn how Poi can improve health and wellbeing. Held in the heart of Matakana, learn the history and evolution of Poi in a fun environment.
Watch feature film Whina nationwide
The highly anticipated Kiwi feature film Whina has its nationwide cinema release on 23 June, this Matariki long weekend. Whina tells the inspirational story of Dame Whina Cooper, her tumultuous life journey and the unshakeable inner strength that led her to become one of New Zealand’s most remarkable leaders
Celebrate Matariki with Rob Ruha, Ka Hao, and the APO in Auckland
Bright stars of New Zealand music celebrate Matariki in Auckland Town Hall. The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra will celebrate with talented New Zealand musicians on 23 June. This one-night-only concert is the perfect way to celebrate the country’s first official Matariki public holiday.
Te Ara I Whiti in Gisborne
Te Ara I Whiti is presented by Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival and brings the riverside to life with illuminated contemporary Māori arts and design, attracting whānau of all ages who delight in wandering through the installations, enjoying the music, and sharing kai. The event is lighting up the Gisborne district from July 9-17 at Kelvin and Marina parks.
Matariki Ki Waikato
Matariki Ki Waikato hosts Matariki festival events from 17 June to 17 July. Featuring mātauranga Māori, arts, culture, kai, workshops, theatre, music, dance, fashion, tours, talks, concerts, and special market days across the Waikato region, the festival is sure to cater to the whole family.
Illuminate Matariki in Auckland
From 24 June to 3 July, some of Auckland’s finest piano-based musicians will perform at their favourite Auckland locations. The Twilight concerts use digital technology to create a captivating light show unique to each song.
Matariki ki te Manawa – Matariki at the heart in Auckland
Walk the footsteps of centuries past, feel the depth of our Matariki kaupapa and witness it in contemporary form. It’s all part of Matariki ki te Manawa – Matariki at the heart. The super-sized lighting and sculptural experience will illuminate the city centre / te pokapū o te tāone in a series of 25 events and installations from 21 June to 16 July.
