Made with aroha: Kawakawa face oil review

With the abundance of skincare products we have available today, it has never been easier to maintain clean and healthy skin. Prone to being both dry and oily, I am constantly on the lookout for the next best product to keep my face fresh and after coming across Wendy Hill Cosmetics’ Kawakawa face oil, I am already impressed with the results.

After relocating from Auckland to Taupo, Wendy Hill decided to dedicate her time and energy into researching and developing her natural Kiriora skincare. The face oils were created in line with Hill’s life values, with her extensive experience and knowledge within the beauty industry and her study of the healing principles of native plants.

Hand made in small batches in Taupō, the Kiriora Kawakawa oils are made from 100 percent natural ingredients and are designed to nourish the soul as well as the skin. Kawakawa is known in New Zealand for its traditional customary healing and health properties, and to make the oil’s creation process special, a Karakia is said when harvesting the leaves.

Within the range there are two face oils. Face Oil #1 is used to replenish, revive and restore and is suitable for all skin types. While Face Oil #2 is for healing, soothing and protecting and is made for sensitive skin types. Both oils have been fantastic on my skin so far as I tend to switch between the two. Each day I clean my skin and apply a few drops on my face and neck and massage it in. I also often use it as a primer as it creates a smooth base before applying my makeup. At first, I was sceptical about adding more oil onto my already oily t-zone, however the Kiriora #2 oil, designed for sensitive skin, actually helps balance my face’s oil which ends up reducing excess oil production. The jojoba oil ingredient also pulls out fats and grime from pores, making them appear smaller and less noticeable, and who wouldn’t want that!

Another factor we love about this range, aside from being all natural, is that none of the oils are ever tested on animals, and all of the containers are recyclable, something many cosmetic brands are lacking.

For those of you who are moisturiser fanatics and think face oil will just make your skin look greasy, then you need to give this range a go. The oils have been formulated with the highest quality ingredients like Jojoba, Argan and Rosehip oils, which are light and non-greasy and have a similar molecular structure to the skin. Dermatologists are even saying that face oils are the missing effective treatment in most skin care routines and are an important addition.

The benefit of using a face oil, particularly the Kiriora range, in comparison to a lotion or cream, is that they contain potent antioxidants and vitamins that allow the oil to absorb into the skin more effectively. The purity of the oils also allows them to be gentler and more effective for any skin type. After only a couple of weeks using these oils, I am already witnessing softer and smoother skin.
