Top Five Classic Movies to Rewatch

As the country is currently in lockdown and activities in the household are limited, we have decided to gather our top five classic films that are worthy of re-watching. Let’s face it, nothing is more entertaining and a better source of time-killing than a good old movie, so grab your choice of popcorn and put one of these timeless flicks on your telly.

The Shawshank Redemption

If you haven’t seen this film already, you’re missing out. Set in 1974, Shawshank is a compelling drama about a young man named Andy wrongfully accused of murder, who in turn, is sentenced to life in prison. After finding an alliance with inmate Red, played by Morgan Freeman, the two find a way to fight off despair and escape. Spotlighting themes such as time, patience and loyalty, Shawshank is a favourite for many.

The Notebook

Now this classic is not for everyone, but there have in fact been grown men who have sat through the romantic drama and even shed a tear. Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the Nicholas Sparks classic tells the tale of Noah and Ally, two teenagers from opposite worlds who dive headfirst into love. Faced with disapproving parents and separation barriers, their desirable connection leaves the audience rooting for the couple to beat the odds against them.

Jaws

Now although this film was significantly more terrifying in 1975, the Steven Spielberg blockbuster still remains a classic to this day. Providing suspense, nasty turns and an iconic soundtrack, Jaws is the story of a great white shark that terrorises a summer resort town in New England, United States. The only way to stop the man-eating beast is to send an unlikely trio of a police officer, marine biologist and shark hunter out into the ocean to kill it. If you’ve already watched it ten times like the rest of us, you might as well watch it again.

Silence of the lambs

One of the most iconic and well executed thrillers of all time. Silence of the lambs is the multiple Oscar-winning film that follows FBI student Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, whose sharp analysis of serial killers leads her an important assignment. The FBI is hunting a viscous murderer named Buffalo Bill who kills young women and removes the skin from their bodies. Clarice is told to seek investigation help from psychiatrist turned psychopath Dr. Hannibal Lecter who is serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. The film then shows the development of Clarice and Hannibal’s uncomfortable relationship and the lengths to which the investigation of Buffalo Bill goes. The disturbingly thrilling masterpiece is one we recommend everyone watches.

Hot Fuzz

With the current crazy times at hand, why not fill your evening with some laughter? Infectiously British, Hot Fuzz is the belly-aching comedy suitable for anyone and everyone. Starring comedic duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Hot Fuzz is based on two police officers who investigate a series of mysterious deaths in a sleepy, West Country village. Full of sarcasm and hilarious gags, the film is the perfect pick me up after a mediocre day.
