Connecting to your body

Tuning into your body’s language is an acquired skill. We often rely exclusively on our head for guidance, so learning about this new world of feeling, knowing, and guiding is completely foreign.

Here’s why your mind-body connection is important:

Your body holds all the wisdom

It’s true what they say about intuition and trusting your gut. While the body can take time to understand and deeply trust messages, it can guide us into truth, authenticity, and purpose.

The mind is an excellent tool. The body holds all the answers to a deep kind of knowing, bringing us alignment and harmony.

You can release emotions through the body

Our bodies can process stressful events through breath work and movement. Body-centered healing practices such as movement therapy and somatic experiencing can assist with emotional health.

Your body is where all the pleasure is

Pleasure exists in the body, not the mind. Just like how challenging and painful emotions are stored in the body, so too are the joyful, magnificent, and pleasurable ones.

By learning how to feel what our bodies have to offer, we are opening ourselves to access a deeper and more meaningful state of bliss.

Top tips for coming back into your body:

  • Observe, let go & breathe

I can always identify when I’m getting ‘heady’ because my thoughts start racing, my breath is shallow, and I feel somewhat ‘cortisol-y’.

By simply noticing when we feel in this state, we have the power to make the switch. The first step is always awareness. The easiest way to come back down to the ground is by pausing and deepening the breath. So simple and powerful.

  • Move, move, move

Movement is great for mental health. While yang style exercise is powerful, we can find other ways to move that bring joy. Movement doesn’t have to be about losing weight or getting abs, it can be about celebrating our bodies and their mobility.

Get creative and incorporate breath and sound into movement. Dance, shake and shimmy in the morning if you’re feeling stuck in any way. By moving our bodies we’re shifting energy.

We can move and then journal what came up for us, or make time to notice how we’re feeling before moving onto the next task.

  • Ignite your senses

Our bodies can experience and luxuriate in a vast array of sensations through taste, smell, touch, and hearing. We can come home to our bodies in the most delightful way by noticing the feelings around us, and better yet, enjoying them too. Do this by listing the sensory experience of each environment in your mind as you go about your day.

Learning to live a connected and embodied life is a process and a continually evolving journey. The benefits are a sense of fulfilment and more profound meaning as we’re able to experience each day more deeply.
