Why now is the perfect time to detox your armpits

When you think about sweating and body odour, summer is probably the season that springs to mind – long days at the beach, hot offices, trying to find shade at a wedding, Saturday morning spin class. They’re all prime perspiration situations!

But let’s flip that on its head for a moment. Spring is actually the ideal season to begin your battle against BO.

Let me explain. For lots of people, their first experience with deodorant was actually with an antiperspirant their mum slipped into their room during puberty. And that’s the way things stayed for years, maybe even decades.

Antiperspirants use aluminium compounds and ingredients such as triclosan and propylene glycol to temporarily stop sweating. These ingredients work by temporarily plugging the sweat glands in the armpits.

At Ultrella, the natural deodorant business I launched during New Zealand’s COVID-19 lockdown, we believe our bodies need to sweat. It’s how your body responds when you’re too hot, when you’ve been exercising or when you’re stressed.

But we also understand that worrying about sweat and body odour isn’t great either. You might have considered a natural deodorant – even tried one or two – and found that they just don’t work for you.

Over time, I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve talked to who have started using a natural deodorant and then entered the dreaded ‘transition period’ as their body adjusted to life without an antiperspirant. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. If you’ve been using an antiperspirant for some time, then it’s going to take your body a while to get used to sweating naturally again. Often people sweat a lot, they have body odour issues, and rashes and skin irritations are really common too. Of course, they blame this on their new natural deodorant and after a week or so, they give up and go back to their antiperspirant. It’s a vicious circle.

What they might need to do is this: an armpit detox.

I know – it sounds like madness. But read on!

Ultrella is the proud producer of New Zealand and Australia’s (and the rest of the world, as far as we know) first demi-perspirant, a natural deodorant that can control sweat. We achieve these results with a natural Botox alternative, called IBR-Snowflake®, that has been clinically proven to reduce sweating by 36 per cent.

And we have also created a sister product to our deodorant range, called the CalmPits Detox Mask – which, crucially, makes the transition to wearing a natural deodorant as easy as possible. Just as you’d put a clay mask on your face to draw out the impurities, we created one for your armpits! We recommend you use it once a day for seven days when you ditch the antiperspirant – wipe on, leave for 10 minutes, wipe off. It can also be used whenever you feel like your system needs a cleansing boost.

Why spring? Well, it’s the season of change and new beginnings.

And, public service announcement, if you start the process now, while it’s still a little cooler outside, you’re setting yourself up for success and an easy slide into summer. What’s more, because the dreaded ‘transition period’ to going natural can take anywhere from a few days up to a few weeks, it’s much easier to go through this during these interim months (particularly while we’re still physically distanced!) rather than when we’re socialising in sleeveless dresses and singlets at summer barbecues.

The mask itself blends pink clay with other natural powerhouses such as kawakawa, hemp and rose to soothe and strengthens sensitive armpit skin. By reducing the capacity of the sweat glands, you’re turning your armpits into CalmPits and that’s got to be a good thing.
