How to keep your blonde hair healthy

As an avid fan and owner of icy blonde locks, I understand the importance of a good hair care routine. Lightening your hair to blonde can be a damaging process but there a few simple ways that will help keep your tresses thick and shiny.

See a professional

I will never recommend anyone lighten their hair themselves. Professionals have years of education to ensure they use the correct solution for your hair’s tone, colour history, texture, and condition. It’s always best to be honest about your hair history too so they can do their very best to keep your hair as healthy and toned as possible.

Purple Shampoo

As your toner that was applied by your stylist fades, purple shampoo offers an in-between toning option at home. Purple and yellow are opposites on the colour wheel so it’s a great match for cancelling out any unwanted golden tones. Be cautious as to which product you use as some can be rather drying. Limit the shampoo to once a week or just as needed. I highly recommend the Glow Lab Purple Shampoo as it’s cruelty-free, not made from harsh chemicals, and is also affordable.

Hydrating products

When it comes to your shampoo, conditioner, and hair masks, I recommend going sulphate-free. Sulphates can strip your hair of everything possible. Be sure to use a good quality repair or hydrating range that is paraben-free and cruelty-free too. This will help add moisture back into your locks which is so important when you are rocking that fierce blonde moment. If you can, avoid silicones in your products too as these act as ‘fillers’ that will make your hair feel soft but in reality, it’s just silicone rather than actual hair nutrition. Make sure to use a hair mask once a week too, you could even do it one the same day as your purple shampoo. There are great recipes for homemade masks online.

A balanced diet

Eating a balanced diet is one of the best things you can do for your hair. Making sure you are eating a good range of vegetables, proteins and healthy fats to allow your body to keep producing healthy strands. Water is a key component of hair health too. Ensuring you have a good level of hydration will transfer to the health of your external body too.

Reduce heat

This rule goes for all hair colours, but especially lightened blonde. Using too much heat can dry out the hair cuticle resulting in damage and breakage. It’s totally okay to keep you using your blow dryer and other styling tools, but just be cautious. Simple changes like using a lower heat setting, applying heat defense products, and reducing how many days you use heat will make a big difference.
