Project by Sarah Heeringa. Photography Amanda Reelick.
Applying a stain to the plywood walls and ceiling of this basic one-room cabin helps protect the surfaces, while Resene Rock Salt stain creates a lighter timber effect, enhancing the room’s simple aesthetic.
To better frame the rural view outdoors I painted the window and door joinery in the peaceful green of Resene Field Day. Applying it to the skirting boards also helps to delineate the space. Finally, the chipboard floor is finished in the dramatic shade of Resene Night Magic, using tough Resene Walk-on flooring and paving paint overcoated in Resene Concrete Wax.
You need:
Broom, brush and pan
Filler, sandpaper and clean cloths
Step ladder
Bushes: large, medium-sized, and angled sash
Roller and tray
4 litre Resene Colorwood
2-4 litre Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat
2 litre Resene Lustacryl
4 litre Resene Walk-on
1. Preparation and apply stain
Fill and sand any holes (using a pale timber filler on plywood to be stained). Sweep and remove any dust.
Apply Resene Colorwood using a large brush, in the direction of the wood grain. Wipe off any excess stain or dribbles as you go. Allow to dry.
2. The walls
For extra protection and longevity, overcoat stained plywood on walls with Resene Aquaclear or Resene Qristal Polyurethanes. You will need at least two coats allowing dry time between coats.
3. Undercoat
Using the angled sash brush carefully prime the skirting boards and any wooden joinery with Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat. Allow to dry. If you’re not confident painting clean edges, mask first with painter’s tape to get a nice clean edge.
4. Joinery colour accent
Sand any dribbles and apply a smooth topcoat to the skirting boards, window and door joinery in Resene Lustacryl. Apply two coats allowing dry time between coats.
5. Floor
Cut in the outside edge of the floor, then use the roller to finish covering the surface using Resene Walk-on flooring paint. Once dry, apply Resene Concrete Wax.
Hot tip:
For a beachwashed finish, stain plywood with Resene Colorwood Whitewash or one of the Resene We Speak Beach stain colourwashes.
