Here’s why your skin is freaking out in isolation

Working from home every day sans makeup sounds like a dream for perfect skin, right? Well, not for everyone. While some might be experiencing glowy skin thanks to less make up, others might be noticing a rise in blemishes, blackheads, dryness or redness. So why isn’t your skin benefiting from the chance to breathe?

We chat to Lucy Macdougald, Dermal Specialist at Biologi to find out what’s really going on.

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

Staying at home a lot more than usual means that many of us are likely not getting enough sun, therefore lacking in Vitamin D. Unfortunately, not enough sun lowers immunity which can increase flare ups of autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and atopic dermatitis. Try to get a little bit of natural sun each day to keep levels of vitamin D efficient, taking care not to overdo the exposure.

ARTIFICIAL AIR

Using air conditioners and heaters during this time can remove moisture from our skin, causing it to dry out. Whilst the appearance of dry skin can be annoying, it also increases the risk of flare ups of skin conditions and makes skin more susceptible to infections. Limit your exposure to artificial air where possible and keep skin hydrated with a moisture rich serum such as Biologi’s Bf Hydration Serum

POOR DIET

A healthy diet is vital to maintain healthy skin, however unfortunately many of us are prone to unhealthy snacks whilst in isolation. If you’ve noticed an increase in blemishes and spots, this could be linked back to the food you’re currently consuming. Try to maintain a healthy balanced diet wherever possible, making sure to keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water.

STRESS

It’s no doubt an unsettling time for most of us, with current circumstances cause more anxiety and stress than normal. Stress can unfortunately reveal itself physically, showing up as a tired appearance or a blemish or two. Whilst stress can be hard to control in uncertain times, try to alleviate it by practicing mindfulness activities such as meditation, yoga or journaling.

LACK OF EXERCISE

With gyms closed and outdoor fitness limited, lack of exercise can have detrimental effects on the skin. This is particularly so if you’re stressing more than normal and not alleviating those feelings through exercise. Sign up to some indoor fitness programs or challenges to keep yourself motivated while in isolation, or make an outdoor run a priority in your day.

SKINCARE OVERUSE

While it might be tempting during this time to up your skincare game, be careful not to overdo it. Overusing things like face masks, cleansers and exfoliators can cause the skin to freak out. This happens because you’re not giving your skin time to naturally balance out its protective layers, thus causing the over production of oils which can lead to things like acne and breakouts.
