Conscious Cheers: Exploring Sustainable Wines

By Jessica Weale

November 19, 2024

Raise your glass to a greener future and toast to eco-friendly vintages! As a wine lover myself I’ve become increasingly aware of the environmental footprint left by winemakers and wineries. There are many wineries though, that are stepping up with sustainable practices – which in my opinion makes every sip just that little more satisfying.

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or enjoying a quiet night in, I’ve got a roundup of wines that perfectly balance flavour and sustainability. So, cheers to drinking responsibly – in more ways than one!

Winemaker Mitchell Taylor of Taylors Wines.

Taylors Jaraman Shiraz 2022

I’ve always been a shiraz girl, and this one is divine! Aged for 12–15 months in American oak barrels, Taylors Jaraman Shiraz 2022 boasts ripe berry and plum aromas with hints of vanilla and spice. On the palate, flavours of cherries, plum and red currant are beautifully complemented by coffee and spice notes, delivering a superbly balanced finish.

This full-bodied wine is crafted from premium Clare Valley and McLaren Vale Shiraz grapes, and recently earned global acclaim, crowned ‘Champion Red’ at the VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition with a near-perfect 99 points.

As a family-owned winery with over 50 years of experience, Taylor’s understand that green is as important as red and white. The winemakers’ commitment to environmental responsibility drives them to adopt best practices in energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction and eco-friendly packaging.

Beatrix Sparkling Rosé

Summer’s arrival brings the perfect excuse for rosé. Alpha Domus, a family-owned winery in Hawke’s Bay’s Bridge Pa Triangle, is innovating once again with the launch of its popular Beatrix Sparkling Rosé in a sustainable, lower-alcohol canned version. Crafted from organic Merlot grapes and loved for its crisp, dry style, Beatrix offers a refreshing option for casual and celebratory moments – plus, the packaging is just beautiful!

This new format, spearheaded by third-generation family member Beatrix Ham, aligns with the winery’s commitment to sustainability and adaptability. Fully certified organic in 2023, Alpha Domus continues to blend heritage with modernity, making Beatrix Sparkling Rosé the perfect companion for outdoor adventures or relaxed gatherings.

Trinity Hill Chardonnay 2023

It took me many years to appreciate a good Chardonnay, and I’m glad I finally gave it the attention it deserves. Trinity Hill is a delightful and affordable choice and also upholds Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand standards, prioritising biodiversity, soil health, water efficiency and eco-friendly practices to reduce its environmental impact. Committed to ethical workplace and business practices, Trinity Hill strives to leave the land healthier for future generations.

Its Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2023 offers vibrant aromas of stone fruit, citrus and grapefruit, balanced by a creamy texture, hints of roasted nuts and a refreshing finish. Perfect with rich seafood or roast chicken!

Babich Organic Marlborough Pinot Gris

Who doesn’t love a Pinot Gris on a warm summer afternoon? Babich Family Estates Organic Marlborough Pinot Gris, with its stunning rose-gold hue, is the perfect choice, showcasing dedication to quality and organic craftsmanship. Produced from the certified organic Headwaters Vineyard in Wairau Valley, this delicately styled wine features elegant notes of florals, nutmeg, honeysuckle, pear and ginger, offering great structure and volume.

Rooted in a three-generation philosophy of working harmoniously with the land, Babich combines tradition with modern sustainability practices. Their commitment spans biodiversity, water conservation, eco-friendly packaging and sustainable vineyard care, ensuring exceptional wines for today and a thriving environment for tomorrow.
