PRODUCED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GOOD X MITRE 10
When we choose to make a little change for better, together we can make a big difference. A big difference is certainly needed…it’s estimated that in New Zealand alone we generate 17.49 million tonnes of waste per year, of which an estimated 12.59 million tonnes is sent to landfill*.
To make it easier for Kiwis to live more sustainably and support the transition to a more circular economy, Mitre 10 is making changes to how it operates and bringing solutions for customers.
By 2025, they aim to eliminate all unnecessary product packaging, whilst all other packaging will be home compostable, refillable, or fully recyclable right here in Aotearoa. And they aren’t waiting around, already up and running are their instore recycling programmes for hard-to-recycle everyday items such as plastic plant and seedling pots, lightbulbs, and polystyrene packaging, and working through a solution with batteries . These are circular programmes, with recycled materials being used to make new products, instead of going to landfill.
A national EV charging network is on the way too. Some stores already have chargers for customers to use, but in four years you’ll be able to top up your charge at any Mitre 10 store around the country. With water conservation, carbon management and solar projects next on their sustainability horizon.
That’s right…the locally owned co-operative isn’t just helping Kiwis build pergolas and plant boxes, it’s here to help build a better future for the planet to support change in our communities and build towards a more sustainable future.
