The Rhythm of Spring According to Chinese Medicine

Like the seeds, we have to push a bit in the early spring. To bust out of that hard casing and past the resistance takes energy. If we are still tired from winter, it may be wiser to just rest. Spring is an active season, which supports us to renew and rebirth ourselves.

Right now in Northland, New Zealand, some days are warm, then next minute, like winter again. This coming and going energy affects the liver, which likes rhythm. In Chinese medicine the liver rules free-flow of energy. It regulates our emotions, our moon cycle, digestion, and energy supplies. In the early spring these things can feel challenged.

When the season hasn’t fully settled into the new rhythm, it is helpful to care for our earth energy, and pay attention to grounding. Our home, mother, and the ways we nurture ourselves, represent earth energy. Giving time and energy to caring for our inner earth balance, helps us to settle the random erratic energies of early spring.

In the Springtime energy moves upwards. The buds are bursting and flowers appear from the underground bulbs in the garden. Similarly, buried emotions can surface. Spring energies can activate old stuck emotions. Frustration and anger are signs of imbalanced liver energy. If these emotions are continually acting out – a pattern – it can be an indicator we need to shift and change something.

Healthy anger is a response to injustice. It is a push back – a way of defending our boundaries. Anger got women the vote, and helps us say “No”, to bullies. Up you is the sentiment, which is also the energetic path of anger. It rises up. Excess anger can make our face, tongue, and eyes red.

All emotions have their place. They are energies motioning, ‘Hey over here pay attention’. The key question is are they appropriate? Feeling grief and sadness after a loss, fear when our safety is threatened, anxiety when we are worried, are all healthy responses to life changes. If they get stuck in our system and we become fearful, angry, sad, anxious people, this indicates an emotional imbalance.

Spring is the season of renewal. Aligning with this naturally expansive energy can help us grow and evolve and clear our old ways of being that no longer serve us. Moving on and pushing past any obstacles, is energetically supported at this time of year.

To rebirth ourselves, it is helpful to take an honest look at what needs to change. Questions to ask ourselves. What is calling me forward ? What is holding me back? Where and with whom am I feeling constantly frustrated? What is the honest truth around this situation/relationship? What do I need to express or change? What/who is helping to grow me, and where do I need to do some pruning?
