New Zealand Fashion Week 2020 postponed indefinitely

As we head into a minimum four-week lockdown, today’s news that New Zealand Fashion Week 2020 is postponed indefinitely as a result of COVID-19 makes sense even though it’s a sad day for the local fashion industry.

August seems like ages away but with fashion retailers closing their doors today for the foreseeable future, it will be a tough financial ride for designers over this time, even with some designers like Kate Sylvester trading online from home.

Around the world and now in New Zealand, stores have been emptied of stock so that they don’t become prey to looters.

In an official statement Dame Pieter Stewart, founder of New Zealand Fashion Week, says the decision was made after consultation with New Zealand fashion designers, and in consideration of recent public health developments.

“We want to make the right decision that supports the wonderful creative industry, designers and partners who are very close to us.  Individually, many of them are hurting already – and I wish each one of them the best during this trying time, says Stewart. “I have no doubt in my mind that we will come out of this stronger – we need to look out for each other, love and care for our colleagues, and look for new ways to reinvent ourselves in the future.”

New Zealand Fashion Week is currently searching for a date where they can activate current plans at the Auckland Town Hall and Aotea Square, and believe most sponsors and partners are supportive of a shift in date.

No further decision has been made in terms of timing or event format, although organisers stress it will be made in full consultation with the New Zealand fashion community.

“We will use this time to sharpen what we already have planned and streamline our approach. The fashion industry will bounce back, and we will be ready.  Our unwavering support for our local designers has not dimmed, and we look forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of New Zealand Fashion Week when the time is right,” says Stewart.

New Zealand Fashion Week was set to run from August 24 to 30.

Brands and stores are operating online include Maggie Marilyn (main image), Zambesi, Ruby and pre-loved designer clothing store Unity Collection.
