Fish Of The Year 2025: Casting A Wider Net For Conservation

February 27, 2025

New Zealanders are being called upon to back their favourite finned friends as the highly anticipated Fish of the Year competition returns for 2025. Organised by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust, the annual event aims to celebrate the diverse range of fish in Aotearoa’s freshwater and marine environments while highlighting the conservation challenges they face.

The 2024 competition saw the humble pāketi (spottie) claim victory, breaking the three-year dominance of ray species in the top spot. This year, organisers are hoping to expand the competition’s reach, aiming for 5,000 votes – five times last year’s turnout.

“We’ve already had a number of organisations openly declare their chosen candidate, and they have clearly stated they intend to run a robust campaign on their fishy critter’s behalf,” says event spokesperson Kim Jones.

While the competition is a fun way for Kiwis to show support for their favourite fish, it also serves a deeper purpose. Many of New Zealand’s freshwater and marine species are found nowhere else in the world, yet their habitats are under increasing threat from climate change and human activity.

“Many of our fish are at risk of disappearing forever,” says Kim. “With climate change and land use patterns putting significant strain on our waterways, it’s more important than ever to raise awareness and advocate for conservation.”

The Fish of the Year 2025 competition will run from March 1, coinciding with the start of Sea Week, until March 16. The winner will be announced on March 17, following what is expected to be a fiercely contested voting period. With New Zealanders’ well-known passion for the environment, organisers anticipate some spirited – if slightly cheeky – campaigning.

“People really love their fish. Like, really love them. We’re realistic that there might be a punch or two landed below the gills. But that’s all part of the fun,” says Kim.

Voting is now open at www.fishoftheyear.org.nz, and everyone is encouraged to participate. Whether you’re backing a beloved local species or just learning about the incredible biodiversity in New Zealand’s waters, Fish of the Year is an opportunity to engage, advocate and have some fun along the way.
