Why everyone needs a capsule wardrobe

Most of us can testify to having a wardrobe full of clothes, but on countless occasions saying ‘I have nothing to wear’. Fashion often compels us to purchase impulsive, trend based pieces and it’s easy to neglect the foundations. Here is why a capsule wardrobe is a must-have for everyone

What is a capsule wardrobe?

The term ‘capsule wardrobe’ was coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that stand the test of time (they are of good quality and are items that don’t go out of fashion – think skirts, trousers and coats) which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.

5 benefits of a capsule wardrobe

We asked Hannah Burnard, founder of New Zealand fashion brand Issue Clothing, who create a 5-piece capsule every season on why a capsule wardrobe is so great.

1. It saves you money

If you purchase the right things you won’t spend as much. It’s about getting out of that reactive and emotional, fast fashion shopping cycle. By putting just a little thought and planning into your wardrobe you will end up with more options for much less money.

2. It allows you to focus on your work and other things of importance

You’re busy and that to-do list isn’t getting any shorter. Having a capsule wardrobe frees up your mind so you can focus on your professional and personal goals that are really important.

3. You’ll always have something to put on

Be it for a Saturday brunch or a Monday morning staff meeting, by selecting and keeping only a staple of clothes in your wardrobe you know you love and will always wear, you’ll feel ready to go and at ease when it’s time to get dressed.

4. Less guilt with buying things you know you don’t need

If you’re someone who buys things on sale because you simply can’t resist, by investing in a capsule wardrobe, you’ll be free of guilt from poor purchase decisions, clothes that don’t fit you, items with price tags still hanging, and overspending.

5. It saves you time

In terms of time, it’s pretty simple, if you already are aware of the styles and silhouettes that work for you then getting ready every morning is a breeze. You might even find that the morning routine you once loathed can actually be enjoyable, and you can spend more time enjoying your cuppa or breakfast instead.

What to add to your Capsule Wardrobe

A pair of tailored trousers

A good pair of pants should combines comfort and style while also being extremely figure flattering. We’re loving the Winter Wide Leg Pant from Issue Clothing above – tucked in or leave out, the higher waist and high quality fabric creates a smooth silhouette.

A statement piece

Every outfit should have one piece of wow factor incorporated to it – whether it be a smart print, bold colour, or statement piece of jewellery.

A strong coat or blazer

A stylish coat makes for an investment you will adorn and love for years to come. Casual or dressy, weekend or work, you’ll wear it for seasons to come. The coat featured is the Le Manteau Coat from Issue Clothing

A practical, stylish handbag

Every girl needs a handbag! Tote bags are functional and stylish, and ethically-made leather handbags also last the test of time. Choose something muted and dark for winter, then light and bright for summer.

A classic white shirt

You can’t go wrong with a classic white button up, t-shirt or blouse. Choose a high quality fabric to ensure you get the most wear over the long term. We love Issue Clothing’s Benchmark Blouse, easy to dress up for a corporate setting, or down with a good pair of jeans.

A pair of flats and ankle boots

Two types of shoes that will never go out of style and are capsule wardrobe must-haves. Going for a better quality might come with a higher price tag, but you know quality means less quantity over time – so you’re probably saving money, and items going into landfill too.
