Alex Perry’s eye for eyewear

Australian designer Alex Perry’s timeless eyewear collection for Specsavers.

The 12-piece eyewear collection features frames in soft rose-pink, smoky pale blue and nude. Good asked Perry a few questions about his prescription designer sunnies and love of glasses.

What is it that appeals to you about designing eyewear?

I’ve been a glasses wearer since I was a child, so I can put my own personal experience into the collections I create with Specsavers. Designing garments for woman around the world is something that I absolutely love and this will never change, but it’s great to have the opportunity to expand this passion into eyewear. This time we’ve added four prescription sunglasses styles for men too, which I’m so excited about. I’m rarely without sunglasses, so now I have four styles to add to the ever-growing collection.

What can we expect from the new collection?

For the female range, we’ve included eight optical and four prescription sunglasses styles – here you will see some bold silhouettes and I’ve also played around with some different coloured acetates. My personal favourites are the rose pink crystal acetate frames – they’re fun but also highly wearable and chic. I love this collection so much that my ‘favourite’ pretty much changes on a daily basis.

What are your favourite trends for the season ahead? Are these reflected in the collection?

I love the sheer/translucent trend and have included a few pairs in the range that have been created with this in mind. To mix things up, I’ve added some completely translucent styles, like the rose-pink sunglasses but also some mottled effect designs, like the warmer purple optical frames.

When designing this collection, I was really inspired by old-world Hollywood glamour and wanted to ensure that every frame had something that would make them stand out – from an unusual shape, to a bold colour or brushed detailing on the temples.

How do you approach the design process?

It’s very different each time. I source inspiration from a range of places, in particular on my travels overseas and I’m always talking to glasses wearers to find out what they value most in a pair of glasses. I look at a lot of samples and options and don’t rest until I find the right look and feel that stays true to the Alex Perry aesthetic.

Who is your inspiration when designing clothing and accessories?

I like to think that my designs evolve but maintain that element that marks them as ‘Alex Perry’. I draw inspiration from people who achieve that – people like Rhianna who’s style evolves but is always distinctly hers. I also love that she’s not afraid to take a risk and have fun with it.

Do you have any advice to our readers when finding their look?

Have a bold style and complement it with a classic statement piece or vice versa. I think balance is the key here. Focus on the shape and go from there –I always recommend finding the styles that work for you then move on to colour and fabrics or the materials that is used, for instance in a pair of glasses. I also love the small details, there is nothing better when you see an item that has been designed with meticulous care with small embellishments that are noticeable on closer inspection.

If you find some styles that work for your face shape you can then have fun with it. Here, opposites attract, so if you have a round face shape, you should go for a square or angular frame and if you have a square face, you should choose a rounder frame. I suggest go in store and trying some different options, it’s how you’ll really discover what is right for you.

You’ve had such a successful career, do you have a stand out moment?

There are too many to count! I’m so lucky to have been able to turn what I love doing into a successful career. Appearing as a judge on Australia’s Next Top Model was up there, it was such fun and I love being able to nurture new talent in the industry. I also have some exciting plans for the future, but you’ll have to wait and see what’s in store!

What’s next for Alex Perry?

A holiday! I’ve been so busy this year that I’m looking forward to a break over the summer. In all seriousness, you’ll be seeing more clothing collections coming and I’m excited for the next meeting with the product team at Specsavers to get going on the next collection.
