Walk this way

Stuck in the doldrums? Can’t summon the motivation to get things done? Or simply got a case of the blahs? Look to your body rather than your mind for the solution

For a few months now, I’ve been practising my sexy walk. This came about when I realised how differently I walked to a friend of mine. She looked carefree, relaxed and had an attractive sway to her hips. Meanwhile, I marched along like a woman on a mission – head down, fast paced and caught up in my ‘do everything in a hurry’ mindset. But the moment I stepped into my sexy walk, I also stepped into the present moment. I became aware of just how much the way I held my body affected my attitude.

I’ve practised this in different ways over the years. I’d create an identity – for instance, “I’m the owner of a successful coaching company”. Then I’d write down all the attributes that comprised this identity – such as confident, positive, creative and outgoing. The key was to step into this identity as I walked into meetings or ran seminars. The moment I adjusted my posture, I felt an instant change in my attitude. As time went by, this became automatic. Adopting a new posture can change your outlook on life.

Think about the attitude you’d like to have. Do you want to be more content or courageous? Fun or focused? Whatever you choose, take a moment to imagine yourself embodying and expressing this quality. Notice your posture and the way you feel. Are you standing taller or holding your head a little higher than usual? Maybe your arms are open rather than crossed. Take in each part of your body and how it relates to the trait you’re adopting.

Now begin practising this posture. You’ll know when you’ve fully stepped into it because you’ll think, feel and see things differently. When you find yourself unmotivated, hurried or trapped in a difficult situation, change your posture and see how your mood adapts.

The saying that ‘beauty comes from within’ is very true. Whether your new posture is sitting up straight, opening yourself up or creating your own sexy walk, the more you invest in this new way of being, the more you’ll feel and look fantastic.
