DHL Express and Surf Life Saving New Zealand have partnered to create an interactive game to help educate Kiwis on swim safety.

Flip’n Stay Safe this Summer is Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) and DHL Express’s new sponsorship campaign.

This game runs from now until January 12 and its hope is to engrain the ten beach safety messages in the beach goers minds.

The game keeps thing fun with a memory style format where you need to match the symbol with its hidden pair.

CEO of SLSNZ, Paul Dalton says that sponsors like DHL Express give them the chance to make effective campaigns. “Our volunteer Surf Lifeguards are working really hard to keep everyone safe, so it’s imperative to not be complacent this summer. DHL’s ‘Flip’n Stay Safe this Summer’ game is an interactive wat for all kiwis to learn and remember the beach safety messages.”

When you play the game you have a chance to go in the draw to win $1000 for yourself and $2000 to a Surf Lifesaving club of your choice.

There are more than 80 sites nationwide that are patrolled by Surf Lifeguards in the summer months and they are staffed by more than 4,900 volunteers.

These Surf Lifeguards saved 702 people in the summer of 2018-2019 through their hard work on site.

The decision to make the game a memory focused activity stems from research conducted at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre. The study found that brain training led to improved memory, learning and attention.

Country Manager for DHL Express, Mark Foy says that Kiwis safety at the beach this summer is paramount. “At DHL we understand that surf lifeguards have to be on a constant look out for many dangers, therefore education Kiwis on SLSNZ’s beach safety is imperative. Engaging them via this interactive digital game is a great way to help Kiwis remember the simple safety message while also helping out their local Surf Life Saving club.”

These are the ten Surf Life Saving NZ Beach safety messages for this summer:

1. Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the flags. Lifeguarded beaches have the safest spots to swim mapped out with red and yellow flags.

2. Look for, read and understand the safety signs. Beach conditions can change in an instant, if you’re ever unsure ask a lifeguard for advice.

3. Know your limits and don’t underestimate the conditions. Your loved ones want you home safe, not battling a rip you thought you could champion.

4. Always keep a close eye on young children in or near the water. Keep children within arm’s reach at all times.

5. Never swim or surf alone. A day in the water is always better with company and in case of emergency, you can keep each other safe.

6. If caught in a rip, remember the 3R’s of Rip Safety. RELAX & float, RAISE your hand to signal help and RIDE the rip until it stops so you can swim safely back to shore.

7. Always wear a life jacket when fishing from rocks. Never turn your back on the sea and always wear a life jacket as large waves can sweep you off the rocks.

8. If in doubt, stay out! Grab a ball, or a book and stay onshore. The beach can still be enjoyed without taking a risk in the water.

9. If you see someone in trouble, call 111 and ask for Police. The Police have a direct line to Surf Life Saving NZ so we can get help to you quickly.

10. Be sun smart – Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap. Protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s damaging rays.
