While we live in a fast-paced world, there’s not many sustainable businesses who can boast about being ahead of deadline.
However this is the case for Soar Communications Group (SCG), who is New Zealand’s largest independent communications group developing creative, content and print solutions for a range of clients.
The company is proud to be on track to hit its 2030 emission-reduction target by 2024 – that’s six years earlier than planned!
So, how did they do it?
This has partly been achieved by the electrification of SCG’s vehicle fleet. With 55% of the fleet now electric, this has seen fuel-use drop by 43%; and through accurate monitoring and management of their power usage SCG has achieved a 9% reduction in energy use too.
“We can’t just offset our way out of a climate crisis, we’ve got to reduce our emissions too, says Zephyr Brown, SCG Information and Sustainability Manager.
“The way out of the climate crisis is to reduce our energy use, and the only way to do that is electrify with renewable energy,” says Brown. “Combating climate change is about reducing energy use, not (just) recycling.”
SCG buys its power from Ecotricity – climate positive certified electricity from wind, hydro and solar. And all carbon emissions from power and fuel consumed by SCG are offset with Toitū Envirocare. Last year SCG achieved a first when they became the first print company in New Zealand to achieve net carboNZero certification for large and grand format printing services, for which it paired up with Go Media.

“Together we’ve developed New Zealand’s first carbon calculator for large format print including outdoor banners and vehicle vinyls,” says Brown. “Being able to offer net carboNZero certified printing services for all our print services, digital, offset and large and grand format means that our clients are now able to accurately measure and offset their scope 3 emissions for their print.”
SCG (Soar Communications Group) is a member of the Climate Leaders Coalition, Sustainable Business Network and a foundation supporter of Ad Net Zero.
