Reminiscing with Karen Murrell

Karen Murrell has always had a strong passion for beauty, cosmetics and skincare.

Inspired by her Nana Gwen – who was like her second mother, Karen fondly remembers creative afternoons spent curiously exploring her Nana’s elaborate make-up collection.

Karen draws on these memories, as well as nature, her favourite flowers, and travel, to capture the unique shades of her well established, well-loved collection of natural lipsticks.

With Mother’s Day soon approaching, we asked queen of natural lip colour, Karen Murrell to share her fond memories learning about beauty from her mother and grandmother, as well as her top lip tips for the cooler months ahead.

Can you tell us how you learnt to make your own skincare from your mother and grandmother?

I grew up in the seventies, where my grandmother and grandfather had a beautiful flower garden, and it was very normal to make everything at home. Time was not as precious then and the process and skill of making things at home was enjoyed so much more. It was a cathartic process of watching our flowers and herbs grow, drying them or steaming them into soaps and creams that we used as a family.

What were your mother’s top beauty tips?

Cleanse, moisturise and always, always use an SPF! And never leave the house without a little make-up.

What Karen Murrell lipstick shade are you wearing right now?

I’m wearing our new bestselling lipstick 23 Blushing Rose. It’s a subtle nude pink that has just enough colour to warm your lips beautifully.

What’s your current favourite Karen Murrell lipstick shade and why?

It’s 23 Blushing Rose at the moment. This colour mimics your natural lip colour and it goes with everything in your wardrobe. I love it and it’s currently my go to! Other regular favs include 15 Peony Petal and our bestselling 05 Violet Mousse.

How can wearing lipstick affect our mood or the way we feel about ourselves?

When I apply my lipstick I feel dressed and complete, you could say more composed even. It’s kind of the same feeling as when you stand up and brush yourself down and straighten your jacket – it says, I’m ready, let’s go!

Do we need a full face of makeup to wear lipstick, or can we just pop it on?

Lipstick can be worn at anytime, anywhere, with or without a full face of makeup. That’s the blessing of lipstick – a little lip colour is often all you need!

As it’s getting into the colder months, what are your top tips for ensuring lips are hydrated and to prevent cracking?

If your lips are slightly cracked or dry, I would suggest incorporating a little lip scrub into your night time beauty routine such as Karen Murrell 00 Lip Sugar Scrub, with its gorgeous granulates of coconut sugar that gently sloths off any dead and dry skin, as well as hydrating and nourishing lips. It can be used every day to keep lips in prime condition over the coldest months. I then like to apply a good coat of 01 Moisture Stick before bed.
