Make your own wood-fired pizza oven

There’s something deeply satisfying about cooking with fire in an oven build with your own hands – not to mention the yummy food. It’s easier than you might think. Here’s how

What you will need 

  • Gravel, less than 1/4 square meter
  • Base fill (broken bricks or concrete blocks) using as many recycled and free materials as possible
  • Sand, 1/4-1/2 square metres 
  • Rocks/bricks or concrete blocks 
  • Wine bottles, 12 or more
  • Cement powder, approx 1.2 bag 
  • Clay, approx 100kg 
  • Fire bricks, about 1 dozen
  • Straw, 1/2 bag, chopped with scissors or lawn mower
  • Several dried cow pats, chopped (optional) 
  • Tarpaulin 
  • Wheelbarrow 
  • Spades 
  • Spirit level 
  • Gloves
  • Cardboard, about A2 in size
  • Labourers (in this case, four kids aged 6-15 years)
