Magnesium junkie

Red Seal naturopath Julie Fergusson reveals her (healthy) obsession with magnesium, and explains how this wonder mineral can help us to maintain balance of mind and body in our busy everyday lives.

Words Julie Fergusson

Like many people, I start my work day driving in traffic (in Auckland no less). Continuous rows of brake lights beaming combined with being on the road with commuters who could do with a refresher class on the road rules can easily shatter the inner calm achieved from my relaxing morning walk with my dog. I also take on too much in my personal life and this combined with a busy job (which, fortunately, I love) can result in a touch of stress in my life.

I am quite sure this story is not unusual. In today’s society, busy is the norm. Juggling work, family, friends, hobbies, pets, health and fitness is not easy. While I can’t lighten this load for you, I do have a little secret that could make life easier, and it is a pretty simple addition to your day.

This little secret is called magnesium. If I had to pick my top supplement to assist with maintaining balance of mind and body in these hectic times, it would be magnesium. I confess, I am a magnesium junkie.

Magnesium is an incredible mineral. It assists in over 300 processes in the body, but is easily depleted through stress, dietary choices, lack of foods high in magnesium, illness and genetic factors.

Boosting magnesium intake can ease stress, emotional and nervous tension, irritability and fatigue. It may also help with the premenstrual period, mood balance and concentration. It also supports muscle relaxation and soothes muscle tightness.

Foods rich in magnesium are spinach, pumpkin seeds, yoghurt, almonds, avocado, dark chocolate (yay!) and bananas. There are also a number of different forms of magnesium supplements which can help. Liquid and dissolvable tablets are quickly absorbed; there are also tablets and capsules.

I’d recommend taking it on a daily basis but if you’re having a stressful day, struggling to sleep, have done a particularly solid workout or are struggling with twitches or muscle tightness, it’s a must. It’s also great for children if they’re a little overstimulated or struggling to sleep. Always read the label before giving to children.

So there you have it. My little secret. Magnesium really is my everyday wonder mineral. Now make it yours today too.

Always read the label and take as directed. Supplementary to a balanced diet. Endeavour Consumer Health, Auckland. TAPS PP9762
