According to NZ’s Ministry for the Environment, each person uses around 73,000 – 110,000 litres of water per year. Here are our top tips to help protect our precious water resource.
1. Collect rainwater
Set up a rain barrel or rain tank to capture rainwater from your roof. This water can be used for gardening, reducing your need to use tap water.
2. Turn off the tap
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving. This simple habit can save several litres of water each time.
3. Mulch your garden
Mulching helps retain soil moisture by reducing evaporation. It also improves soil health and reduces the need for frequent watering.
4. House rule for number 1s
Establish a house rule to avoid flushing for number 1s or consider using a composting toilet.

5. Shorten showers
Reducing your shower time by just a couple of minutes can save up to 150 litres per month. Consider shaving outside the shower.

6. Water plants wisely
Water your garden in the early morning or late evening to minimise evaporation. Use a soaker hose or drip irrigation system to deliver water directly to the roots, where it’s needed most.
