Colour and a splash of gold transforms and accentuates an old cabinet’s understated Art Deco style.

This cabinet was painted using the elegant Resene Teal Blue, and darker Resene Licorice for highlighting features. A gold finish from the Resene FX Metallic range adds a glamourous light-reflecting top. Where possible, paint was applied using small microfibre rollers for a smooth finish. The rollers and trays can be covered overnight in a reusable plastic bag film to save washing up.

You need

-Wet and dry sandpaper and sanding block

-Gloves, protective clothing, dropcloth and cloth

-Multipurpose Washi masking tape

-2 x Resene Easy Reach roller kits, microfibre rollers

-Assorted small brushes

-Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat

-Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen tinted to Resene Apache

-Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in your chosen colours

-Resene FX Metallic Gold Dust

-Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner

-Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane

Step 1: Before

This wooden cabinet is solid and functional, but its dark wood finish is worn and dull.

Step 2: Prep

If the cabinet has a high gloss finish, sand it first. A lower sheen finish may not need sanding. Clean well using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and a cloth.

Step 3: Undercoat

Cover all paintable surfaces with Resene Quick Dry undercoat. Allow to dry.

Step 4: Top coat

Apply masking tape as needed, then add a coat of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss in Resene Licorice, or your chosen shade, to the sides and frame. Allow to dry and recoat.

Step 5: Second colour

Using masking tape as necessary, apply Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss in Resene Teal Blue, or another chosen shade, to the doors and decorative features. Allow to dry and recoat.

Step 6: Metallic basecoat

Using masking tape as necessary, apply Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen in Resene Apache to the cabinet’s top surface. Allow to dry.

Step 7: Metallic topcoat

Apply a sparkly finish to the cabinet’s top surface with your chosen shade. I used Resene FX Metallic Gold Dust.

Step 8: Protect

Remove the masking tape. Apply 2-3 coats of Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane allowing dry time between coats. The gloss finish will help your metallic effect look its best.
