Derived from a collective of Pacific and Mãori fashion designers, artists and performers that electrified Auckland in the 1990s, Pacific Sisters: He Toa Tāera | Fashion Activists exhibit showcases the best of the collective’s costumes and performances.

For over 27 years the Pacific Sisters have collaborated on performances, installations and exhibitions that collide art with fashion and overturning stereotypes about Pacific culture with the aim to affirm Pacific arts and heritage. This exhibition will work to highlight the varied Pacific identities and backgrounds, as well as the bond of sisterhood. It will integrate influences of high-end fashion with the urban environment, indigenous politics and advocacy. Auckland Art Gallery’s Head of Curatorial and Exhibitions Sarah Farrar says, ‘The exhibition highlights the collective’s daring creativity, ground-breaking fashion and activist spirit.’

The Pacific Sisters are also collaborating with the Gallery for a special late night event, Art After Hours, F’Rock Da Base, with performances, fashion, music, food and art, held on Thursday 28 March from 6 – 11pm.

If you’re a fashionista with an activist heart, this one is for you.
