Calling all creatives, makers and planet-loving Kiwis. Fashion Revolution NZ is launching Fabric Forward: Upcycle Design Challenge, a national competition that invites you to take second-hand or discarded clothing and transform it into something fabulous!
Launching 3 June 2025, the challenge is about more than just making a great outfit, it’s about shining a light on Aotearoa’s growing issue with textile waste, while championing creativity, circular design and sustainable fashion thinking.
Whether you’re a pro with a needle and thread or just love a good DIY project, this is your chance to reimagine fashion with what already exists.
“Everyone is welcome, no matter your experience level,” says Amanda Butterworth, Country Coordinator for Fashion Revolution NZ. “You just need to care about the planet and be willing to get creative.”
With second-hand shops overflowing and fast fashion leaving its mark, Fabric Forward is all about shifting our view of waste. Instead of tossing textiles, why not transform them into something fresh and inspiring?
“We’re excited to showcase how discarded garments can be turned into unique expressions of style and sustainability,” says Assistant Coordinator Natalia Bertolo.
So, how does it work?
There are two categories to enter: Clothing and Accessories.
The rules are simple: Upcycle used, damaged or discarded clothing or textiles into something wearable for everyday life.
Entries will be judged on: Originality, transformation, craftsmanship and sustainability.
To enter: Submit before-and-after photos, a list of materials used and a short write-up about your inspiration and process.
Open to all ages and experience levels and it’s completely free to enter!

Each category winner will take home a prize pack worth over $1,000, including:
