DIY Bee & Butterfly Water Station

By Sarah Heeringa

February 1, 2025

When the weather is warmer bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects need safe access to water. You can make a simple watering station using an old pot and a few other easily sourced items. Adding rocks that sit above the water line provide landing areas, saving bees from drowning.

Using Resene Sandtex creates a textured finish similar to natural sandstone, and the moody pink of Resene Valentine adds a whimsical touch of colour.

Large terracotta saucer

Large pot

Assorted rocks

A medium paintbrush

Drop cloth and rags

Sander and ear muffs, or sanding sheets

Step 1

Assemble materials. If using an old pot or saucer, scrub well with water. Allow to dry.

Step 2

Coat the saucer underneath using Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer. Once touch dry, flip over and coat the top edge, leaving the centre unpainted. Wash your brush out in water.  If your pot is terracotta, coat that inside and out with Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer too.

Step 3

Use an electric sander and earmuffs or rough sanding sheet to buff the outside of the pot if you’re using a plastic pot. Dust clean.

Step 4

Paint the top edge of the saucer using Resene Sandtex in a shade of your choice. We used Resene Sandtex Mediterranean effect in Resene Valentine.

Step 5

Turn the saucer over and carefully coat around the top edge. Allow to dry. Wash your brush out in water.

Step 6

Paint the outside of the pot using Resene Sandtex. Liberally apply paint using the side of the brush for an extra textured effect. Once dry, assemble in place, add rocks and fresh water.

Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer is an Eco Choice product that’s perfect for sealing terracotta pots, reducing summer water loss.
