Good editor Carolyn Enting puts the V15 Dyson Detect Total Clean vacuum through its paces with surprising results.
Never in a million years would I imagine reviewing a vacuum cleaner! As a feminist, I’ve always cringed at advertising campaigns where the woman of the house expounds the virtues of the latest cleaning gadget. It always grated me that women were cast in housework roles getting stains out of white shirts or merrily vacuuming shagpile on the telly.
So, with that disclaimer, and the fact that my partner likes this particular vacuum cleaner as much as me, here is my review.
Upgrading from our cordless Dyson V10 to the Dyson V15 Detect was like a giant leap for the cleaner kind. It’s just so satisfying to use as well as doing a great job of picking up all the dust. No, really, you can literally see the dust while you are vacuuming thanks to a laser beam that illuminates the floor in front of it. Yup, it has a laser beam!
The precisely angled laser detects the dust particles you can’t normally see and makes them visible so you don’t miss anything.
It’s astounding how much dust settles on the tiles. Your eyes just goggle when you first see it. And it provides a similar feeling of satisfaction that you get when you use a water blaster and see whatever you are blasting (deck, paving, walls) transform before your eyes.
When you are using it on auto you’ll also notice the suction decreasing and increasing. This puzzled me initially but it turns out the V15 has a piezo sensor that continuously sizes and counts dust particles – automatically increasing suction power when needed.
And if you’re a technical geek, you can see more proof of the V15 deep clean on the LCD screen which shows real-time scientific data of what’s just been sucked up.
What it’s sucking up is also impressive and if you suffer from allergies this could be the machine for you. Dyson’s fully-sealed filtration impressively traps 99.99% of microscopic particles and allergens as small as 0.3 microns – and expels cleaner air.
The roller on the Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head, which picks up the dust, works beautifully on hard floors and carpets. The black anti-static carbon fibre filaments extract fine dust from hard floors, and while it comes with other accessories I mostly just use the main head as it gets up nice and close to walls and tricky spaces, sucking up those normally hard to get crumbs in the kitchen.
The battery also provides up to 60-minutes of cleaning power.
Adding the V15 to our household has definitely made things easier for me because sadly, even though it is 2021, I’m the person who does the majority of the cleaning in the household. My partner still hangs his clothes on the floor and is mostly allergic to housework, so the fact that he is enthusiastically using the V15 is a huge bonus.
