A DIY guide to a kid-friendly table makeover

Turn a basic table into a favourite spot for little Kiwis to play and learn.

Children grow fast and their furniture needs to change as they do. Use Resene paint and colour to transform boring but functional pieces, adapting them to best suit each life stage. It’s a chance for you to explore your creativity – you get to play a little as well.

Use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel for a low-VOC, tough and wipeable surface.

Some furniture may need a primer or sealer – check with your local Resene ColorShop staff.

You need:

  • Sandpaper and cloth
  • Thick paper, scissors, 2B pencil and eraser
  • Paintbrushes: medium-sized and a detail brush
  • 2 x 1-litre Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel Neutral base: Resene Green Spring Accent: Resene Vesuvius

Step 1 – Pick your project

A coffee table can be just the right height for a toddler’s play corner. Look for them at op-shops and recycling centres.

Step 2 – Preparation

Use medium-grade sandpaper to quickly buff all surfaces to be painted. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Step 3 – Base coat

Choose a neutral shade that complements your interior. Paint the table all over, taking care to smooth out any drips. Allow to dry and recoat as necessary.

Step 4 – Paper shapes

Draw a simple kiwi silhouette and geometric shapes on stiff paper. A paper shopping bag works well for this. Cut out the shapes.

Step 5 – Trace shapes

Use the soft 2B pencil to trace the shapes in position on the table top.

Step 6 – Paint shapes

Use the detail brush to carefully paint inside the pencil lines. Starting from the kiwi’s head and working down, use the brush and extra paint to create texture that mimics the feathers.

Step 7 – Tidy edges

Once the paint is dry, use the eraser to remove the pencil marks.

Step 8 – Job done

Now it’s time for play time to begin.
