Knitting pattern designer Katrina Robinson has been busy weaving more than just yarn. She has recently introduced a heartwarming initiative aimed at combating anxiety with creativity.
The release of the ‘Finding Calm Scarf’ pattern from Robinson’s Nelson-based business, Purl Foundry, is a thoughtful endeavour designed to provide solace and support for those navigating anxious feelings.

Developed in conjunction with Anxiety NZ, this project not only promotes mental well-being but also serves as a fundraiser for essential mental health services.
Robinson’s passion for knitting transcends the creation of beautiful patterns. She understands the therapeutic benefits of the craft, particularly its ability to induce a state of flow – a mental state where individuals become fully immersed and lose track of time, leading to a decrease in stress and anxiety. The Finding Calm Scarf pattern embodies this concept, offering a soothing activity that can help knitters manage their anxious feelings.
The first year of Covid saw a 25% increase in prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide and while this number has since dropped, anxiety rates are still higher than pre-pandemic numbers. “We all go through times of feeling stressed and anxious but dealing with stress for long periods of time or at high levels can have a negative impact on your body and wellbeing,” Robinson says. “Coping techniques often aren’t taught to us as children, yet these are essential life skills.”
The pattern is designed to be accessible for knitters of all skill levels, providing a gentle and repetitive task that can help calm the mind. By encouraging knitters to focus on each stitch and row, the pattern serves as a mindful activity that promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety.
In addition to the calming effects of knitting, the project also acts as a fundraiser. Donations collected through the pattern’s distribution will directly support Anxiety NZ’s education resources and support services. This collaboration highlights the importance of community and collective efforts in promoting mental health awareness and support.
Robinson’s goal is to get her scarf pattern into as many hands as possible. By doing so, she hopes to spread a little love and relief to those who need it – it’s about creating a ripple effect of kindness and support.
