Q: I’m wondering whether flooding is good for vegetable gardens. We were recently flooded very badly and our veggie plants were destroyed. We are wondering whether we need to do anything to the soil before replanting. –Simonne

A: Occasional flooding won’t affect the structure of the soil too much but it may have washed away some of the nutrients. Prior to planting, dig the whole area over, dig it deep at least a good spade-depth down and bring the bottom layer to the top.

Then spread a good amount of compost over the top of the soil and dig that into the soil, but you really only need to dig it into the top 5cm of the soil – this is where are the action happens.
