Staying Connected to Community During COVID-19

It’s a trying time right now. Festivals and concerts are cancelled, our friends and family are self-isolating, or we’re working from home all on our lonesome.

In some ways, it feels like we’re going backwards. To protect against the spread of COVID-19, cafés are refusing BYO reusable cups, and hongis and handshakes are being replaced with the raising of the eyebrows, called the “Kahungunu wave”.

We’re increasingly become attached to our devices to keep up to date with the evolving situation. Not only is this hampering our ability to digitally detox and take a mindful breather now and again, the hype of COVID-19 in general is increasing our anxiety.

So, how can we get our daily dose of authentic community connection through technology, without becoming completely consumed?

1. Call your elderly family and friends. As they’re the most at-risk demographic, it’s essential to check-in and see how they’re coping with social isolation. In fact, we should do more of this in general, and not just because there’s a global pandemic.

2. Try not to group chat your friends all day! Instead, book in a group Facetime or Skype. Seeing other’s facial expressions and having a laugh will lift your mood.

3. Go on a news and social media diet – check your feeds a few times a day, but don’t spend all day becoming consumed by the situation.

4. Take a walk and get some fresh air. You can still keep your distance from others, and nature has benefits to keep you grounded.

5. Workout from home, in your garage, or your backyard. There are many ways you can access your favourite workouts or fitness class, whether it’s through YouTube, live streaming, or an app. One of our favourite YouTube workout channels is Yoga With Adriene, and Les Mills is offering free trials for their at home workout videos.

6. Please don’t work from bed or stay on the couch all day. Wash your hair on a regular basis, and cleanse your face! Speaking from experience, this will prevent you from falling into a further slump.

7. Reach out and see if your neighbour needs assistance, do some DIY around the house, and conquer as much life admin as you can. You’ll feel better for it!

Stay safe and healthy out there!
