Discover six books that will bring you mindfulness and happiness.

Words Emily Wilton

The unpredictable season of winter can bring rain and dark nights. There’s nothing better than breaking out of a winter funk and being reinvigorated with the right book. That’s where these hand-picked six books come into play. They’re set to brighten and show direction, showcasing the theme of empowerment and self-growth.

The Book of Knowing by Gwendoline Smith

The perfect afternoon read, with less than 200 pages, each page is like gold with a humorous twist and illustrations littered throughout. It is the brainchild of Gwendoline Smith, after realising she had tapped into the main artery of the unmet need in mental health through her Tumblr blog Doctor Know. She covers a range of topics and emphasises that “ … reality is not the problem … you choose whether or not to adapt,” she says.

The Path Made Clear by Oprah Winfrey

In her latest book, Oprah Winfrey shares a key lesson from her own life in every chapter. She tells the personal story that set the course to living her life the best she could. There are more than 100 visually stunning images inside and she has also included quotes that reiterate her messages, including one from Pico Iyer: “Luxury is a matter not of all the things you own but of all the things you can afford to do without.”

Finding Gratitude by Rebekah Lipp and Nicole Perry

This book is a product of the Awesome Inc. Founders, who share simple ideas that can improve your life through conscious changes and environmental awareness. They explain how gratefulness turns negatives into positives with the right mindset and thinking. Inspirational quotes are used to encourage positive thinking and there’s a section on the changing seasons.

The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates

As co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda Gates’ goal is to discover solutions for people in need, regardless of where they live. One thing keeps coming up: if you want to lift a society up, invest in women. In this book she provides simple yet effective ways that all of us can make a difference. She covers empowerment from women with no voice, gender bias and creating new cultures, as well as the moment of lift. She shares her story and the stories of many other women.

Body Image Warrior by Chelsea Bonner

A real feel-good, motivational story of one woman’s journey to battle society’s one-track mind on the untapped potential in the modelling industry. Daughter to a supermodel and film star, Chelsea Bonner shares her life story as she battles through a world that would always tell her she wasn’t allowed to take up space. Fighting back against the stereotype, she breaks the mold in the modelling industry by starting her own modelling agency BELLA, focusing on health and wellbeing and changing the narrow perspective of ‘beautiful’.

Life in Flow by Kate Kendall

Kate Kendall covers the topics of connection in our society, our mindset and our everyday lives. One of Australia’s most respected yoga teachers, she has decided to share her experience, advice and her life journey that led her to where she is today — at peace and in touch with herself and her people. She covers goal setting, meditation techniques, yoga tips and the mantra of joy.
