On average, every 22 minutes, another New Zealander receives the life-changing news: “you have cancer.” This stark reality highlights the crucial need for support systems to help those affected by this devastating disease.
Dry July, the annual event that encourages participants to give up alcohol for the month of July to raise funds for cancer patients, is back and stronger than ever, with all funds raised directly supporting non-medical services that provide essential resources to navigate life beyond diagnosis and treatment.
Dry July aims to improve the comfort, care and wellbeing of New Zealanders affected by cancer. The funds raised stay in New Zealand, benefiting cancer patients, their families and carers. This year, the proceeds will go to three remarkable charities: Look Good Feel Better, Prostate Cancer Foundation New Zealand and PINC & STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation.
Sophie Bennett is one of the many participants of Dry July, partaking for the second year in a row. Her journey is deeply personal, inspired by her cousin Steph’s battle with cancer. “In 2017, my beautiful cousin Steph got diagnosed with thyroid cancer,” says Bennett. “Since then, she’s had to go through multiple surgeries, radioactive treatment and tests. Throughout this time, I can’t believe the strength, determination and spirit for life she has shown. Since March 2022, she has been in remission. I do Dry July as a way to support her and thank her for showing me that no obstacle in life should ruin your spirit.

“My family and friends support me, but honestly, this year has been more of a struggle to get donations – I think with everyone more stretched with their wallets. I use social media posts to get my page out there, the cause, and why I am doing it. For me, even though the health benefits are great, it’s more about the awareness of the charities – so I encourage Golden Tickets too!
“The saying ‘every dollar counts’ is true, so no matter how little or how much you raise, you are contributing to the greater cause. Do it, you won’t regret it (especially with a couple of Golden Tickets!).”
Join Dry July today and support the incredible charities that make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. Whether it’s through giving up alcohol, making a donation, or simply spreading the word, every effort counts.
