HELL to divert 99% of packaging from landfill

Although they’re already doing well to keep waste products down, pizza company HELL is not stopping there.

More than 96 per cent of HELL’s packaging is recyclable, but their focus is to get that to around 99 per cent.

While their making changes to their packaging choices, HELL is also calling on other companies to do their bit to reduce the packaging they’re sending to landfill. Considering an estimated 735 tonnes of packaging goes to landfill every year in New Zealand, there’s plenty that can be done.

Ben Cumming, general manager of HELL, says there’s great customer support for the company’s focus on reducing its environmental impact.

“On average, every month more than 300,000 pizza boxes are sent out, and all can be recycled, along with our side boxes, dessert boxes and bags and the majority of our packaging. However, we are still working on doing more. Recently, we began using compostable bags, and next, we will replace our salad boxes with a recyclable option,” Cumming explains.

In 2014 HELL became members of the Public Place Recycling Scheme. They’ve also introduced 45 e-bikes into urban centres, which aim to reduce delivery times and emissions.

“This work and our customers’ support has inspired us to do more and be more environmentally friendly — something we think other major food producers should also do.”
