Karl Lagerfeld, YSL and New Zealand fashion label Harman Grubisa can now claim a commonality

Words Carolyn Enting

Harman Grubisa designers Madeleine Harman and Jessica Grubisa have beaten the Australian competition to become the first brand from New Zealand to win the Australasian International Woolmark Prize.

Since the launch of the label three and a half years ago the pair have ticked off some impressive firsts, including being chosen as the Mercedes Benz Presents designer for New Zealand Fashion Week 2016.

Their win in Sydney brings them one step closer to the International Woolmark Prize famously won by Karl Lagerfeld in 1953 and Yves Saint Laurent in 1954.

Each of the 12 woolmark finalists from around the world, including Harman Grubisa, will receive a $75,000 financial contribution to their next collection and an invitation to participate in the finals. The overall winner of that round will receive $215,000 as prize money.
