Guide to best festival dress

If you are one of the many thousands of people lucky enough to be going to Splore next week, and haven’t yet got your costume sorted you are not alone!

Even with the best intentions, many of us end up doing a last minute panic run to Look Sharp to grab some festive garb. I’ve been guilty of this in the past.

This ultimately results in buying cheaply made items made from unsustainable materials and wrapped in plastic that fall apart throughout the festival dropping harmful glitter and sequins everywhere.

So what to do? Splore has written up this helpful sustainable style guide’ for ‘wearing while caring’ at the Festival.

So if, like me, you still haven’t sorted your outfit, it provides some fantastic tips and ideas. Because, after all, we still want to dress up for New Zealand’s greatest dress-up party.

The guide suggests approaching options for your costume in this order:

  • Use what you already have
  • Borrow
  • Swap
  • Thrift
  • Make
  • Buy

Buying something new is a last resort and I’m down with that.

Splore Festival has also tackled the ‘shiny’ issue in its guide. Glitter is a huge tiny shiny problem with micro-plastics messing with the marine life.

Splore’s mates at BodyFX will be stocking compostable dissolve bio-glitter at Splore so that you can shine responsibly. You can read more about bio-glitter here.

Also, avoid wearing sequins if you can. Even if you already have a sequin dress or bought sequins pre-loved as they have a tendency to drop off and fish eat sequins, too, if they float into their food chain. The good news for magpie stylistas is that biodegradable sequins have now been invented though they are not available yet. But the future is looking sparkly.

Another thing to be mindful of is cultural appropriation. World-wide it is common for festival goers to wear feathered Indian headdresses but this is actually offensive. Plus, it’s not kind to our feathered friends.

So, this weekend have a look in your wardrobe/costume box and think about Splore’s 2020 theme ‘Infinity’ and see what you can dream up. If you can’t find what you need, make a trip to your nearest second-hand store and get creative. After all, it’s all about being creative and having some fun.
