Green School New Zealand is a project built on passion. Passion for children, the environment and the future. Taranaki’s Michael and Rachel Perrett have taken on the challenge of their lives to not only introduce New Zealand to the Green School way of learning, but the world.
Based on the values and principles of Green School Bali, founded in 2008 by Canadian John Hardy, Green School New Zealand educates and empowers young people to thrive with purpose through hands-on, entrepreneurial learning experiences, based on sustainability.
Set on an exquisite 60-hectare farm next to the Oakura River and under the watchful eye of Mt Taranaki, the school is set to open in February 2020 for approximately 100 students, from years one to eight, and year 11. Early childhood and further high school curriculums will be introduced as the school and its students grow.
The school’s point of difference is that it has a greater focus on how it teaches, rather than what it teaches. While the curriculum will cover core subjects including maths, science and English, these will be taught through thematic learning that has both entrepreneurship and sustainability at the core. The forward-thinking environment aims to teach students very early on that they have the ability to affect change, now.
With co-working spaces, activities for all ages and sustainable programmes to participate in, Green School New Zealand is not only for students but a place for parents and like-minded individuals to join a community of learners, making our world more sustainable.
