Allbirds raises awareness of Bird of the Year with limited edition shoe

For the first time in the 14-year history of Forest & Bird’s Bird of the Year competition, a seabird earned the 2019 title.

And this bird needs our help. The Hoiho, or Yellow-Eyed Penguin, is in decline, with some estimates putting the remaining population at around 1,700. Trends indicate the possibility of local extinction in the next 20 to 40 years.

To aid the population recovery of the Hoiho, a portion of the proceeds from Allbirds’ Limited Edition Hoiho Tree Runners will go towards Forest and Bird’s conservation efforts.

“As a brand that was dreamed up in New Zealand and focuses on protecting our natural world, we’re happy to be able to support the important work Forest & Bird is doing for indigenous wildlife. It is a great fit for us” says Allbirds co-founder Tim Brown.

“One of the reasons New Zealanders love Bird of the Year so much is because of the passion, quirky originality, and light-hearted trash-talking that goes into promoting our native birds. Everyone involved has a lot of fun,” says Forest & Bird spokesperson Megan Hubscher.

The Allbirds Bird of the Year shoes are an extremely limited edition, last year selling out in just a few days. Just like the Hoiho itself, the exclusive Hoiho colourway only lives in New Zealand.

The shoes are available online here or at the Allbirds Auckland store in Britomart, Auckland CBD. Waddle to it and support our flightless friend!

Since 2005, New Zealanders have been able to campaign and vote for their favourite native bird online through Forest & Bird’s website while learning about the conservation challenges facing our native animals.Voting lines for the New Zealand 2020 Bird of the Year competition open on November 2nd 2020.
