Allbirds for Forest and Bird

For the second year in a row Allbirds have partnered with New Zealand Forest & Bird to launch a limited collection of shoes inspired by last year’s Bird of the Year.

The crowned winner of Bird of the Year for 2018 was the gluttonous kererū which is well known for being the drunkest bird in New Zealand. While the bird is in an endemic state and not currently endangered, it is vulnerable to attacks by predators such as feral cats and stoats.

This year the Allbirds design team have come up with two inspired shoes, the “Sober Kererū” Tree Runner and the “Tipsy Kererū” Tree Topper style. The shoes are extremely limited edition, last year selling out in just two weeks.

Allbirds’ Tree fabrication is a renewable material that is much easier on the environment than traditional fabrics. The tree fibre — TENCEL™ Lyocell — is sourced from South African farms that minimize fertilizer and rely on rainfall, not irrigation. Compared to traditional materials like cotton, it uses 95 per cent less water and cuts their carbon footprint in half. Along with this tree-based upper, the shoe laces are made from recycled bottles and the soles are made from sugar.

A portion of proceeds from the sales of the shoes will be donated to Forest & Bird in support of their work.
