Allbirds team up for Bird of the Year

Votes are now open for the Bird of the Year competition, and there’s an Allbirds element to this year’s campaign too.

It was definitely a case of ‘birds of a feather flocking together’ with Forest & Bird and Allbirds joining forces to launch the 2018 Bird of the Year competition at Little Bird Unbakery, Auckland on October 1.

In addition to launching this year’s competition, it was also the official release of a special edition trainer by sustainable footwear brand Allbirds, inspired by the plumage last year’s Bird of the Year competition winner – the kea.

Voting for the Bird of the Year is open until October 14.

Visiting the site is also a wonderful way to acquaint oneself with New Zealand’s birds by learning more about them and listening to their calls. You can find out more and vote here birdoftheyear.org.nz

Forest & Bird’s Melissa Irace says “I think a lot of people will be surprised when they realise how many of our native birds are at risk. Sadly, one in three is at risk of becoming extinct. With this in mind, we’re really excited to collaborate with Allbirds,” says Irace. “ We love their commitment to sustainability and, most importantly, the proceeds from their shoe sales will support our ongoing work to protect New Zealand’s native birds and their habitats.”

Made exclusively for our friends in New Zealand, the special-edition Kea Wool and Tree Runners, inspired by the kea’s colourful palette, are launched online on October 1.

And, in a nod to Aotearoa’s +64 area code, 6.4 per cent of all sales will be donated to Forest & Bird to help support their mission of protecting New Zealand’s birdlife.

If you live in Auckland or visiting the city during the voting period, Little Bird Organics will be hosting the Allbirds and Bird of the Year display including voting platform at its Ponsonby Unbakery in Summer St, for those who’d like to see the Kea Runners in person, and vote for their favourite bird.
